چکیده

Complex interventional radiology (IR) procedures contribute an increasing percentage of the overall medical radiation exposure of the population making accurate dosimetry a challenge. Magnetic resonance (MR) based polymer gel dosimetry has been widely employed in complex dosimetric problems in radiotherapy. The aim of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of normoxic gel dosimetry in IR. Dose response, energy dependence and dose rate dependence were investigated in irradiation setups relevant to IR for a particular normoxic gel, based on Methacrylic Acid (MAA) as the monomer and including THPC (Tetrakis-hydroxy-methyl-phosphonium chloride) as antioxidant.. The gel presents a linear dose response beyond a 25 cGy threshold. While no significant energy dependence was observed in the useful range of interventional radiology (80-110kVp) at the low dose level, a linear correlation between gel response and dose rate was observed in the range of dose rates relevant to IR (5-8 cGy/min). These results may suggest that oxygen scavenging of free radicals and polymerization inhibition reactions by hydroquinone have a quantitative effect at gel response at very low dose rates.

Brachytherapy polymer gel dosimetry with xCT

ABSTRACTBackground: Polymer gels are an emerging new class of dosimeters which are being applied to the challenges of modern radiotherapy modalities. Research on gel dosimetry involves several scientific domains, one of which is the imaging techniques with which dose data is extracted from the dosimeters. In the current work, we present our preliminary results of investigating capability of X-r...

Investigation of the Spatial Resolution of MR-Based Polymer Gel Dosimetry versus Film Densitometry using Dose Modulation Transfer Function

Introduction: The conventional methods of dosimetry are not capable of dosimetry in such a small volume of less than one cubic millimeter. Although the polymer gel dosimetry method based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could achieve three dimensional dosimetry with high resolution, a spatial resolution evaluation based on gel dose modulation transfer function has not been investigated yet. ...

Investigating the Effects of Cut-Out Shield on High-Energy Electron Fields Using MAGIC Normoxic Polymer Gel

Introduction The use of cut-outs in electron applicators make changes on output, isodose, and percentage depth dose (PDD) curves. These changes and electron beam dose distribution in the form of three-dimensional (3D) can be measured by gel dosimeters. Materials and Methods Dosimetry was performed with and without a square shield (6×6 cm2 field). The energies were 4, 9, and 16 MeV and phantom w...

Evaluation of MRI-based Polymer Gel Dosimetry for Measurement of CT Dose Index (CTDI) on 64 slices CT Scanners

Introduction: Computed tomography (CT) has numerous applications in clinical procedures but its main problem is its high radiation dose to the patients compared to other imaging modalities using x-ray. CT delivers approximately high doses to the nearby tissues due to the scattering effect, fan beam (beam divergence) and limited collimator efficiency. The radiation dose from multi-slice scanners...
